Inside the Madness and Mastery of the 2026 World Championship Squirrel Cook-Off

There is a specific kind of magic that settles over Northwest Arkansas every September. While much of the outdoor world turns its collective gaze toward early-season archery blinds and scouting plots, a fiercely dedicated, fiercely eccentric subculture converges on Springdale, Arkansas, for one singular purpose: celebrating the humble tree squirrel.

Held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Ozark Highlands Nature Center, the World Championship Squirrel Cook-Off once again proved why it has become a legendary bucket-list event. Drawing competitors and spectators not only from all across the United States but even internationally from Europe, this epic gathering is equal parts culinary symposium, conservation outreach, and glorious, lighthearted madness.

For our team—Cast Iron Chris & The Tree Kittens—the 2026 competition resulted in an unforgettable milestone: taking home the title of World Champions. But beyond the trophy and the bragging rights, the day offered something far more valuable.

The Epicenter of Ozark Outdoor Culture

The energy at the Ozark Highlands Nature Center is electric from the moment the gates open. The competition officially kicks off at 9:00 AM, but the air is already thick with the rich, savory aromas of woodsmoke, rendered fats, and wild-harvested game long before the first entries hit the judging table. Depending on the random number your team draws, food presentation and turn-in begin strictly at 12:00 PM.

Walking the grounds is an experience unlike any other festival in the country. Rows of eclectic vendors mix seamlessly into a bustling, camo-clad crowd. Side attractions run all day long, featuring everything from a fast-paced squirrel skinning contest and a rugged arm wrestling competition to the notoriously intense “hottest squirrel eating contest.” This year added an extra touch of heart: a 10-week-old Mountain Cur puppy was auctioned off on-site, with 100 percent of the proceeds directly benefiting Children’s Hospital.

Crafting a World-Championship Menu

Winning a world title requires stepping outside the box while respecting the core integrity of wild game. The core cooking roster for Cast Iron Chris & The Tree Kittens featured Chris and Johanna Parker alongside Susan Eason, working in perfect synchronization behind the cast iron.

As for me, serving as the team’s public affairs officer, politicker, and the resident Natural Resource Manager for the Pine Bluff Arsenal, my job was keeping the morale high and the public engaged. Together, our team delivered a masterclass in field-to-table fine dining that captivated the judges’ palates:

CourseMenu ItemCulinary Description
Main CourseRustic Wild-Harvested Squirrel GumboSlow-simmered, deeply flavored gumbo served over a bed of fluffy rice, crowned with a delicate, handcrafted quenelle of savory squirrel potato salad.
Side DishCrispy Southern-Style Squirrel Boudin BallsArtisanal boudin balls featuring tender, spiced squirrel meat and rice, hand-breaded and fried to a golden crisp, paired with a custom signature zesty dipping sauce.

Bridging the Gap: Introducing the Public to the Wild

Trophies and ribbons are fantastic, but for me, the absolute highlight of the World Championship Squirrel Cook-Off has nothing to do with the judging scores. It is about the people on the other side of the serving table.

Our team brings along a vital fourth member whose primary mission is not to prep or cook, but to serve. We actively invite non-hunters—folks who have never spent a morning in the hardwood timber or processed a piece of wild game in their lives—to walk up and taste squirrel for the very first time.

In a modern world disconnected from the landscape, events like this provide an invaluable platform. It is a chance to show the public that we, as hunters, are deeply ethical stewards of the land. We care profoundly about conservation, resource management, and utilizing every gift the woods provide. Watching a skeptical first-timer take a bite of our boudin balls or gumbo, light up with genuine surprise, and engage in a conversation about conservation is the true reward.

When the dust settled, the 2026 World Champions were officially announced: our team, hailing right out of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where we share pews together at the Whispering Pines Cowboy Church.
